Did you know that 35% of household waste is compostable? Whether you are currently composting or if you want to start composting, we can provide you with useful information.
There are different types of composting and so there should be an option that will suit your lifestyle.
If you are a home owner you may want to set up a system in your backyard that you can use to compost your household wastes.
If you live in a community that has a community compost program you can take advantage of this easy way to compost your food and yard wastes.
If you live in an apartment and don't have a yard and you don't have access to a community compost program, why not try vermicomposting?
For more detailed information on each type of composting continue with me, Mr. Mobius, as we tour the Ecoville Composting Site.
Composting in Manitoba
Although, we don't know for sure how much waste is being
diverted from the landfill due to all of the committed composters here
in Manitoba, we do know that the potential is huge! It is estimated
that one-third of our household waste could be composted. Backyard,
community and vermicomposting activities have the potential to:
Conserve
the energy that would be required to transport this waste to the
landfill - transporting garbage to the landfill either by individual
homeowner or by garbage truck produces air pollution that contributes
to climate change.
Extend
the life of your community's landfill - if each household sent one -
third less garbage to the landfill that would dramatically increase the
number of years left in your landfill's life.
Reduce
your contribution to climate change - in a landfill organic wastes
breakdown anaerobically. When these food wastes decompose without
Oxygen they produce a gas called methane. This greenhouse gas is 20
times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
The
most exciting part about composting is that the finished product is a
completely organic soil enhancer that can be spread on your lawn and
garden to return nutrients to the soil.
