Tires

In 1992, under the Waste Reduction and Prevention Act, Tire Stewardship Regulation, the government of Manitoba began collecting a levy on every new tire sold to be used on a liscensed highway vehicle or trailer. This levy is collected by the retailer or distributor or new vehicle dealer. On April 1, 1995 the Tire Stewardship Board was created to take over the Used Tire Management Program that was started in 1992. In Manitoba, the Manitoba Tire Stewardship Board promotes used tire recycling. The mandate of the Tire Stewardship Board is to operate the scrap tire waste reduction and prevention program and administer the Tire Stewardship Regulation.

Did you know.....

In the United States about 1 tire per person is discarded each year.  That's over 300 million tires every year!

Manitobans are Reducing Waste!

In fact, since 1995, over 93,000 tons of scrap tires have been diverted from landfills in Manitoba. That is equivalent to over 7.5 million passenger tires!

Tire Recycling in Canada

Did you know that there are 30 million tires sold annually across Canada? If you're like me, you're probably wondering what happens to all of those tires when they are no longer useful. Well, nine provinces and the Yukon Territory have joined together to form the Canadian Association of Tire Recycling Agencies to help prevent old tires from ending up in landfill sites. As we continue on our tour through the Ecoville Tire Recycling Facility, we will learn more about what happens to tires when they are recycled, why it is important to recycle your tires and how the Manitoba Tire Stewardship Board can help us with our recycling.
