Used Oil, Filter, and Container Recycling in Manitoba

Luckily, in communities like Ecoville, across Manitoba there is a safe and easy way to dispose of used oil, filters and containers. Mr. Doityourselfer has told me that he feels great knowing there is a better way to dispose of used oil materials. The Manitoba Association for Resource Recovery Corp. (MARRC) was established in 1997 by manufacturers and marketers of oil products in Manitoba and is managed by a Board of Directors comprised of industry and public representatives. Its mandate is to develop, implement and administer a cost-effective, sustainable, user-financed and province-wide stewardship program for used oil, used oil filters and used oil containers on behalf of its members.

There are 48 Ecocentres in the Province of Manitoba with 5 more coming soon. We will learn more about the Ecocentres as we follow Mr. Doityourselfer to the Ecoville Ecocentre. Visit the Ecoville Town Hall to find out if there is an EcoCentre located near you.

Manitobans are Reducing Waste!

In 2002, MARRC helped Manitobans reduce waste by recycling:

  • 11.8 million litres of used oil (79% of total recoverable)
  • 1.50 million used oil filters (75% 0f total recoverable)
  • 164,000 kilograms of used oil containers (18% of total recoverable)

Give used oil products new life!

Knowing what happens to materials after you recycle them helps you understand why recycling is important. After further investigation I discovered that there are many products that can be made from used oil materials.
  • Refining used oil can completely restore it's lubricating properties so that it can be used again as oil in your car again.
  • Recycled oil is also used extensively in the production of asphalt for roads and highways. It can also be burned for energy.
  • Oil filters are shredded, heated to a molten state and the metals re-used as material for other metal products such as rebar, nails and wire.
  • Empty plastic oil bottles can be recycled into new containers, railway ties, plastic flowerpots, plastic pipe, guardrails, fence posts and plastic patio furniture.
