For Teachers and Environmental Educators

Are you a South Carolina TEACHER needing recycling lessons, materials, presentations or grant funding?

Education is a priority of the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control's Office of Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling (Office) as noted in "Action for a cleaner tomorrow" ("Action"). "Action" is an activity-based, interdisciplinary curriculum supplement that can serve as a starting place for introducing basic environmental education in the classroom. These lessons are hands-on activities that help students get the facts...think for themselves...form opinions...make decisions...and take "Action" for a cleaner tomorrow! Click here to learn more.

Want to start a school recycling program?

"Starting a School Recycling Program: A Step-by-step Guide to Help You Begin Recycling at Your School" - this guide offers information on starting and expanding school recycling programs. From determining what items to recycle to tracking your progress, this guide will provide the information you need. Click here to view.

In addition, the Office offers a Recycling Education Grant Program that is funded from a two cent per gallon fee on motor oil sold at the wholesale level. The grant program is available to schools to promote awareness of solid waste issues, including the need to reduce the solid waste we generate, and to recycle whenever we can. All projects are required to include a used oil awareness project because of the funding source. Any K-12 public or private school may apply on its own or school districts may apply on behalf of their schools. Applications must be completed by school or district staff. Grant awards are competitive, funding is limited and awards may vary from year to year. For more information, e-mail Sharon Thompson, coordinator of the Recycling Education Grant Program for the Office.
